Keratin Hair Treatment

You asked so many really great questions regarding Hope's experience with the keratin hair treatment, we decided it was time to enlist an expert to answer them all. We sat down with Shuki Almac at the Warren Tricomi salon in New York last week to get the answers.

Q: Will I still have to blow dry and/or straight iron my hair after a Keratin hair treatment?
A: Yes. The Keratin hair treatment prepares the hair for blow drying. The beauty about it is that it makes it easier to style your hair and your style will last longer.

Q: I color my hair. Can I still get a Keratin hair treatment?
A: Yes, but it's better after you color, because the coloring process may strip out the Keratin. If you get highlights every other month, have the Keratin treatment the month in between. With single process color, it's not as much of an issue, as the color generally only goes on your roots. But you should still have color first. Either way, the treatment is color safe.

However, one of my clients found that after her hair was color corrected, she lost a lot of the benefits of the Keratin. But my clients who color their hair don't usually experience problems.

Q: My hair is damaged. Can I still get a Keratin hair treatment?
Yes, because it's not breaking any bonds. In some cases, it might even help out.

Q: Will my curls go away after a Keratin hair treatment?
A: Curls will typically be loser, but if you have very curly hair, you will still have curl. It's a great treatment for those with curly hair, because it helps so much with frizz.

Q: Will my waves go away after a Keratin treatment?
It really depends on what you start off with, because that will be the base. Like curls, waves will be loser. If your hair is only slightly wavy, it will be close to straight. As the treatment washes out, your natural wave will return.

Q: How do I care for my Keratin-treated hair?
The same way as you would for color treated hair. Use shampoos that are less stripping. I recommend to my clients that they use shampoos for color treated hair. If you want the treatment to last longer, try to wash your hair less, as it removes the Keratin.

Q: How long will the Keratin Hair Treatment Last?
A: The time frame varies from person to person, but generally it's three to six months. I depends on your hair type, how often you wash your hair and if you have your hair colored.

Q: Why does the Keratin Hair Treatment Cost So Much?
It's pricey because it's a customized treatment that takes about three hours and is a lot of services in one. I usually throw in a trim, because once the hair is so straight, you can really see the cut.

Thanks, Shuki! Readers, we now have Shuki on speed dial, so let us know if you have any other questions!

thanks for the post, maybe I could try this instead of completely relaxing my hair.

Will I lose my Keratin treatment if I relax my hair after 2 months?

The Jet Set Girls said...

Since the Keratin treatment is a protein that is added to your hair, any processing you do after your treatment can strip the Keratin from your hair. With that said, you probably won't want to relax your hair after this treatment. It serves a similar purpose as relaxing with less damage to your hair.

My hair is really curly!! will it compleley straighten my hair, I usually use the permanet hair straighten by rusk and love it, although I get my hair hilighted a week after. Drawback is the touchup process and not being able to highlight, and having to do the grow out process....I JUST LOVE MY HAIR BETTER STRAIGHT!!! NEED FEEDBACK ON THIS PRODUCT...

I did not have any curl left in my hair after the treatment. Some stylists say it only takes away the frizz; but I think that depends on the hair. If your curl is something you can't live without, I wouldn't recommend this treatment. If you're looking to get rid of frizz; but don't mind losing curl in the process, it's a good choice.

I had a keratin treatment done and my stylist had me flat iron it straight the first 3 times I washed it to seal it in. The fourth time I just let it air dry and I definitely still had all my curl and noticed that my hair was less frizzy and more controllable and if I do blow-dry the process goes quicker (only about 66% of the time it took before)... though I have to say it wasn't a huge difference and my hair honestly never felt like silk and given the cost and how my stylist said my hair would feel like silk and be perfect I was a little disappointed. I've heard it works better the second time you have it done but given the cost not sure if I'll do that.

I still cannot believe the benefits of the keratin hair treatment, my sister and i had the keratin complex done at marc azzi hair and it was fantastic, the hair is unbelievable, frizz free and manageable

I've just had keratin treatment a few days ago. How are people styling their hair day to day? My stylist doesn't want me using a curling iron but I need a bit of a curl for it to look good. Any suggestions?

I had my hair treated two months ago. I think to measure the time it lasts is by how many shampoo's and not weeks. The 14th time I washed my hair, I thought it might be wearing off, but wasn't sure. Today is my 15th shampoo and YES, I do notice a bit of frizz and want to be treated again next week! My hair has always had a nice curl and wave to it, but the FRIZZ has always been my biggest problem all my life. Just walking past the shower room gives me frizz! I live near the beach and my hair shrinks up into frizz!
Well actually it USED to! That's before I did the Keratin for the first time two months ago on Nov. 20th. I LOVE THIS! This is the hair I have always wanted. The hair I see on other girls and just wish I could have! Now I have that hair! OMG it makes my life so much easier. I will say that I used to wash my hair at least every other day, but now I will go sometimes four or five days, because it looks so good and unless I have to go somewhere, I want to wash it as little as possible. Also, I only use shampoo and Volumizing conditioner without sulfites as recommended by my hair dresser. It only took less than two hours to do. My hairdresser charges $150. and I gave him a $20 tip. He said there is NO REASON that salons should charge 300 to 400 dollars for this, it's nonsense!
And he owns his own salon too!
I'm so happy and I want everyone that has had to suffer with frizz to do this. It's life changing.
If you want straight hair and don't have frizz, I wouldn't do it! It will relax the hair, but not straighten it and I think you are MUCH better off with Rusk straightening or something like that. I have used the Rusk and it made my hair too straight and I still had a lot of frizz, so I have tried everything.
I don't know the difference between the Brazillian Blow Out and the Peter Coppola Keratin, but I had the Coppola and LOVE it! Oh I should add that I do still use a flat iron because it gives it a real "polished" look, but there were a couple of times I skipped the flat iron and still it look fantastic!
I hope this isn't too long and that it's helpful. (excuse my miss-spellings)

Henri Borday, Director of Education in NYC for the KERATIN SMOOTHING TREATMENT
BY COPPOLA working at;

Mizu Salon
505 Park Ave.

will list the Keratin Smoothing Therapy FAQ's

Q: What is Keratin Complex Natural Smoothing Treatment by COPPOLA?

A: It is a specially formulated revitalizing and rejuvenating treatment for the hair that eliminates up to 95% of frizz and curl. The advanced patent-pending formulation restores and restructures hair by infusing a special blend of natural keratin deep into the cuticle. The keratin is bonded into the cuticle by the heat of a flat iron to relax the hair’s sub-cuticle layer.

Q: How much time should be allowed for the treatment?

A: Time should be determined on an individual basis. Depending on hair length, type and texture. Please allow a 2 to 3 hour window.

Q: What results can be expected after the treatment?

A: The hair will be more manageable and take much less time to style. (approximately half the time) It will be noticeably softer and straighter, with added life and shine as well as a lengthened look.

Q: Can hair be colored before the treatment?

A: Yes! A great time to have the treatment done would be directly after permanent color, semi-permanent or highlights. The treatment will extend the life and seal the color in, leaving it vibrant, however, for demi-gloss or toners have color done 3-5 days after treatment for optimal results.

Q: Can the treatment be done on chemically treated hair, previously relaxed or straightened hair?

A: YES, But it is recommended to wait two weeks between any chemical services.

Q: How many days after the treatment before the hair can get wet or be washed?

A: You must wait 3 days (72 hours) before washing your hair or swimming.

Q: Can the hair be pulled back or clipped up during the 72-hour waiting period?

A: No. The hair should not have any impressions made by using bands or clips.

Q: What should be done if the hair gets wet during the 72-hour waiting period?

A: Blow the hair dry and flat iron with medium to low heat immediately.

Q: What kind of shampoo and conditioner should be used?

A: Keratin Care Shampoo & Conditioner (Sodium-Chloride Free) or Keratin Color Care Shampoo & Conditioner (Sodium-Chloride and Sulfate Free).

Q: How often can the treatment be done?

A: The treatment can be done as often as every 4-6 weeks.

Q: Is the re-application of the treatment done on the entire head or just on the new growth?

A: The re-application should be done on the entire head as the build-up of keratin can only improve, not harm, the hair.

Q: How long will the treatment last?

A: The treatment will last about4-5months, depending on lifestyle and maintenance, provided the client follows all after care instructions.

Q: Should the hair be cut before or after the treatment?

A: It is recommended that the hair be cut after the treatment, as the hair will have a smoother texture and will lie differently.

Q: Can the treatment be done on pregnant or nursing women?

A: No. It is not recommended.

*We recommend that you use the Keratin infused shampoo and conditioner that is specifically formulated to work in conjunction with the treatment for a longer lasting rejuvenation. If you are not using these products, please ensure that the shampoo and the conditioner you use is SODIUM CHLORIDE AND SULFATE FREE.

*Prior to swimming in the ocean or a chlorinated pool, wet hair and apply conditioner sparingly to protect hair from salt and chlorine. After swimming it’s suggested that you rinse your hair with clear water to eliminate any salt or chlorine build up.

*You can color you hair anytime prior to having the treatment. You must wait 2 weeks to color your hair after the treatment.

Help! I just had a karetin treatment for straightening my hair. I know I cannot wash for 3-4 days but my hair feels gross! It is heavy w/the treatment solution or whatever it is. It looks ok but I can barely get a brush through it and it's all globbed together. Is this normal?

The Jet Set Girls said...

Hi, Michelle,

That does not sound normal! I would call my stylist this morning and try to get back to the salon. I'm not an expert, I can only tell you my experience. My hair was easy to comb and not tangled at all. It did look flat and greasy by the second and third day, though. Good luck!

We recommend you ask a reputable Keratin stylist at what age you can start. Good luck!

I love the Coppola. I done it 2 times and it is really sleek and quick to manage. It cost me $200 in Chicago which includes Moroccan Oil Shampoo and Conditioner. I will continue doing this as long as I can afford it. My hair has never looked so healthy and I dye it too.

Hi so i was supposed to get my hair dyed this weekend (about a week before i was getting the smoothing therapy) but my hair dresser cancled the color appointment! is it okay to color my hair about a week after I have the treatment done? i'm scared it will ruin it! I get blonde highlights when i get it done which is what i am most worried about!
