The Best Looks from the Oscars

Today's post is from stylist Christina Joy.

Last night's Academy Awards were a pleasant surprise. More of the ladies seemed to get it right this time.

Although it goes without saying that a select group of leading ladies didn't quite nail this performance. What many of them (and their stylists) tend to forget is that the Oscars are a stage and the world serves as their audience and critics. Now you wouldn't send an actress out on stage in the wrong costume without proper hair and make-up, would you? So why on the world stage do so many get it wrong?

I wish these women would remember that just because it's the Oscars it doesn't mean that you have to look overdone. Remember you have to work with what you have. It's always better to look "you" appropriate than not like you at all. Too many of the women look like they handed themselves over like dolls and said, "make me look good". There was an abundance of fussy hair, bad up-do's, fake tans and barely there make-up. While others chose the completely wrong dress for their features, age and look.

It also seemed like there was a lot of stylist influence which isn't always such a good thing. In other words, actresses were wearing looks and acclaimed designers not because it looked good on them but because they want to be viewed as fashion icons with a broad fashion vocabulary. Ladies, you shouldn't try so hard to make a statement because truth is, no one will remember what you're trying to say but they will remember how bad you looked.

But those who got it right nailed the formula - a dress that fits their figure and who they are plus luminous make-up that flatters their features balanced by hair that complements the whole look.

Halle Berry glowed and sparkled in Marchesa.

Mila Kunis was sweet yet mischievous in Elie Saab.

Scarlett Johansson was sexy and sultry in Dolce and Gabbana.

Reese Witherspoon was sleek and sophisticated in Armani Prive.

Mandy Moore looked fun and flirty performing on stage in a Monique Lhullier cobalt confection.

Camila Alves looked daring and different in Kaufman Franco.

Jennifer Lawrence was sunny and bright in Calvin Klein Collection.

Annette Bening was simple yet elegant in Naeem Khan.

Last but not least, Anne Hathaway got 3 of her 7 seven looks exactly right during the broadcast. Look 1 in Givenchy,
Look 2 in Lanvin and

Look 4 in Oscar de la Renta.

Here's a swank Plan B: Check into the New York Palace Hotel for its Royal Wedding Breakfast. At 6 am, breakfast service will begin to correspond with the 11 am wedding start time in London and it concludes at 8 am with a champagne toast.

The Royal Wedding Breakfast at the New York Palace is $150 and rooms start at $299. Find out more about the Royal Wedding Sunrise Breakfast

Bridesmaids: The Trailer

Here's another reason we can't wait for spring: the release of Bridesmaids, the movie. The movie, starring Maya Rudolph as the bride and Kristen Wiig as her maid of honor doesn't open until May, but the trailer gives a sneak peek at the hilarity that awaits. We especially love the ideas they have for the bachelorette party!

Sponsored Post: Take a Spa Break

Spa Breaks

One of our favorite past times is taking spa breaks from our hectic schedules. We've done so all over: at the beach, the slopes, Texas hill country, in wine country, and of course even close to home.

If you're choosing a resort for a spa weekend, check out their specials and packages. Often times, you can get a spa credit in addition to your standard room rate which is less than buying a spa package separately. One popular combination of services is a facial, body scrub and massage. If your lucky, there's a spa lunch in the middle to break up your services. This also makes a great bonding day with your girlfriends if you're able to commune in the relaxation room between services or share a cup of tea. Just remember to drink lots of water after your treatments to flush out those toxins.

We're fans of the vichy shower treatment which we had on Amelia Island. It combined a scrub and massage with the healing power of dozens of jets streaming over your body. It's a good choice if you're looking for a single treatment, because sometimes you don't have a whole afternoon to spend at the spa especially if the beach or pool is calling you!

Spa days are a great way to relax and unwind, and who couldn't use that?

A Peek Inside Rachel of TNI's Carry On

This week we're looking inside Rachel Wolery's carry on bag. Rachel is a co-founder of ZipSetGo.com and host of Traveler's Night In twitter events on Thursdays. Tomorrow's is a biggie--in honor of the first TNI anniversary, the topic is Best of TNI and you can enter to win a Mac Book Air. Join in tomorrow 3:30-5 EST on twitter.

Rachel herself is a self-described travel junkie:
Traveling runs in my family, but I didn’t really catch the bug until I hit college and lived abroad three times in four years.  Once I used my passport, I knew it was something that I was going to make a priority in my life. After a short stint working in public relations, my dream job fell into my lap. For the past 3 years I’ve held various roles for a top 25 meeting and incentive company traveling the world. A year ago three of my colleagues and I created the ZipSetGo.com community to share destination knowledge, and help travelers plan travel fast!"
Here's what Rachel travels with:

I am really into my Cole Haan satchel right now. I love the cross body and shoulder strap, plus there are compartments to keep me organized and plenty of room for an ipad, and a rolled up change of clothes. If I had my way, I would be toting a Vera Wang for Hartmann mobile traveler as well.

What are some of your must have beauty products when you travel?
Some products that I am really loving right now are Say Yes To Cucumbers wipes, they are hydrating, portable and perfect for planes; I can’t put on makeup without using Clinique Even Better first; Murad Energizing Pomegranate Lip Protector for  a little color and shine; aviator sunglasses are my quick fix for tired eyes, and  lastly, a small bottle Miss Cherie Dior perfume for when I get off the plane.

What type of sweater or wrap do you use?
I wear a lot of cardigans during any season. Every woman travels with a wrap–those planes get chilly!  I like to buy mine when I travel. My favorites are my rainbow of cashmere pashminas from the Florence markets, and my heavier Ikat designs from Ecuador.
pashmina

What music do you like to listen to when traveling?
I love to nap or read listening to Radiohead, Peter Bjorn and John, Aretha Franklin and Regina Spektor. It's such a treat to have time to do nothing but relax and catch up on reading. When it is almost time to land I listen to more upbeat music like MGMT, Pheonix, and hip-hop.

Any recent or fave plane reads?
On the Road by Jack Kerouac is what I am reading now, it’s such a classic I am almost embarrassed to admit that this is my first time reading it! It’s about the author’s cross country adventure, inspiration to get out and travel. As for magazines, I usually pick up Scientific American Mind, psychology is a close favorite behind travel.

Any fave plane snacks?
I always indulge in a soymilk green tea latte at the airport. I am also really enjoying Kind Bars at Starbucks.

Where have you traveled to recently?
I just got back from a ski vacation to Colorado, hitting the slopes at Vail (below), Breckenridge and Beavercreek and relaxing at night. I love the small mountain towns, they look like they belong inside a snow globe. Before that my family and I went on a vacation to Ecuador, getting off the beaten path and exploring the mountains and markets.

See Liz Taylor'sand Princess Grace's Jewels at the Cooper Hewitt

Princess Grace Engagement Ring

Each piece of Van Cleef and Arpels jewelry is so stunning and undeniably a work of art, it's only fitting that it's the focus of the Set in Style exhibit at the Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York. The exhibit features gorgeous pieces, including Princess Grace's diamond and pearl engagement ring (above) and this Lamartine bracelet (below), along with matching earrings, that Richard Burton gave Elizabeth Taylor in 1971, because they matched violet eyes.

Elizabeth Taylor Van Cleef bracelet
You'll also see examples of the famed Van Cleef and Arpels zipper necklaces that transform into bracelets and this Walska Brooch/pendant. Originally a "push" present, it features wings that become earrings, a  tail that's a brooch and a 95-carat yellow diamond in the bird's beak that can also be worn as a pendant.

The exhibition runs through June 5.

On Our Radar: Hotel Theodore in Scottsdale

We stayed at the Mondrian in Scottsdale for our first trip after creating The Jet Set Girls, so we were sad to hear it closed. Opened in its place is the Hotel Theodore and by the looks of it, not a lot changed. The public spaces were open, chic and modern; but the guestrooms were on the small side and the bathrooms were definitely not big enough for our group of four. Your best bet is to come here for TR's Lounge and Teddy's Nightclub; but stay at one of Scottsdale's posh resorts.

Ritz-Carlton Toronto Opens Today

Ritz-Carlton Toronto
The Ritz-Carlton is coming to Canada today with the opening of its Toronto hotel near the financial and performing arts districts. While we're looking to head south this month, we're excited to know there's an outpost of the Ritz next time we have an opportunity to go to Toronto. The guestrooms are predictably lux with floor to ceiling windows overlooking either Lake Ontario or the city and the bathrooms have heated marble floors, plasma t.v.'s, and rain showers. The hotel's signature restaurant is Toca by Tom Brodi and features a Canadian menu with homegrown products from local suppliers  We're curious about the walk-though pastry kitchen, the in-kitchen chef's table and the glass encased cheese cave. The lounge located on the same level offers tapas and a raw bar if you're in the mood for lighter fare. For more information visit www.ritzcarlton.com/toronto.

A Peek Inside Bev Sanders' Carry On Bag

As the founder of one of the first snowboarding companies and the Las Olas Surf Safaris for Women, which she currently runs, Bev Sanders has seen the best of the snow and the surf. Her recent travels have taken her to Tuscany, Manhattan, Mexico, Las Vegas--and she's headed back to Mexico, near Puerto Vallarta where the camp is, next week. Here's what she travels with:

My carry on is an old Eagle Creek wheelie bag. It has hide-away shoulder straps for trekking- very old school. I'd love to buy a new carry-on, but this one's like an old friend- we've been around the world. I save the bed sheet packages. Great for packing, and perfect for carrying wet swimsuits home.

What are some of your must-have beauty products on the plane?
Alba Suncreen, Aveda Brilliant Conditioner, MyChelle moisturizer and a small spray bottle of cool water (for my face) so I arrive refreshed.

What type of sweater or wrap do you wear?
A Patagonia fleece jacket works when I'm flying to Mexico, but I like black cashmere if I'm heading to the big city.

Any recent or fave plane reads?
Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh. It's packed with insight, but light as a feather. Of course, she was the first American woman glider pilot.

Any music playlist for flying?
I love Let Go by Frou Frou. The song makes me feel weightless. Flying is ultimate escape for me and I dream about it constantly.

Anything else you have to have with you when you travel?
I guess I'm an Apple fangirl. I have a MacBook, iPad, and iPhone. Yikes!

Any fave girls' getaway locales?

Sponsored Post: Peru Vacations

High up on our bucket list of things to do is climbing Machu Pichu in Peru. While we’re not full on adventure girls, we’ve read so much about Peru holidays and the mystical experience of seeing the ruins through the mist at dawn, we would be willing to leave our blowdriers and pool boys behind to experience it. Our friend Samantha’s recount of her 40th birthday trip has us particularly excited to check it out. Cusco is the official starting site to any journey to Machu Picchu and is accessed through flights from Lima. Because of the elevation, it’s best to arrive in Cusco a few days before you plan to tackle Machu Pichu so your body can adjust. Depending on how adventurous you are and what your penchant is for activity holidays, you can hike (usually 5 days) or take a train or bus to the summit of Machu Pichu. Whichever way you decide to go, a local guide can help you plan your trip, explain the local legends and history surrounding Machu Pichu and make sure all your needs are met during your climb and descent. Find out more about holidays to Peru.

New Women's Trench from ScotteVest

ScotteVest Women's Trench
If you've read our blog long enough, you know what big proponents we are of carrying on your luggage. It saves you checked bag fees, time by avoiding the luggage carrier, and you'll never be without your favorite LBD because the airline lost your luggage.

Scottvest takes it to another extreme by designing clothes that have so many hidden pockets, you can pack your clothes and amenities right in your jacket. Fully packed they are comically bulky; but the airlines don't have a response yet to this crafty way of getting around the luggage issues. Until now we haven't been impressed with the styles of the tops, vests and jackets for women; but their new trench coat is a huge improvement. It's available in four versatile colors: the red is a beaut, the periwinkle great for Spring and Summer and the black and tan good for those of you who don't want your coat making a bright color statement.

Until we have the chance to try one of these jackets ourselves, you can read K.D. Summer's trial as seen in the Washington Post.

Price is $130 at ScotteVest.

What Men Notice First

Steve Ward

In a recent study conducted by Pantene, 74% of men indicated that they notice women because of their hair and more men notice a woman's hair before her clothes, legs or makeup! We all know that good hair is important but I had no idea that it is one of the most prominent observation by men during their first encounter with women. How long your hair is plays a big part, as well as smell, shine and feel.

Most of us didn't know that men even paid attention to these things but Steve Ward, host of VH1’s Tough Love confirms that they do! Being a professional matchmaker, he is well in tune with what men are really looking at and it was obvious to him that a guy would rather date a woman with well groomed healthy looking hair rather than a low cut shirt.

Since guys are actually noticing these details, Hallie Bowman, Pantene's Celebrity Hair Stylist recommends deep conditioning at least once a week (specially in the winter), using hair type specific products (curly vs straight, etc.), adding volume with Pantene Fine Triple Action Volume Mousse to increase the look of fullness and always keeping your favorite hair product in your handbag for late in the day touchups. The last is my top tip, too, since most hairstyles get progressively flatter, stringier, etc.  throughout the day.

And for all you guys out there: A complement on her hair can win a girl over, as Amber of Beauty Blogging Junkie recounted after receiving one from Steve. Even though his over-analyzing of her facial expressions ultimately lost her, her hair is what brought him over to her table. Now that is proof of the power of nice hair on first encounters!
