Fall Trend Report: Chunky Highlights

Our friends at Daily Makeover are busy identifying the fall trends. Here Megan McIntyre dishes about chunky, funky highlights:

Looks like it's time to break out the Manic Panic. The big beauty trend for hair at Fashion Week was bright, chunky streaks of color that brought to mind punk-inspired street style circa 1996. At the Cynthia Rowley Fall 2010 fashion show, Eva Scrivo for Wella Professionals custom colored hair extensions in shades of emerald, lapis, amethyst, navy and turquoise to replicate the rich jewel tones present in the collection. Each hair extension was completely saturated with professional salon haircolor and then woven into the hair and styled, creating an element of surprise and intrigue when models hit the runway.
Super stylist Ted Gibson for beauty.com went for a version of the trend that was a little easier to DIY at the Vena Cava Fall 2010 fashion show (shown below). He used Streekers to color hair extensions in shades of hot pink, purple and green, then pulled them back into the models' slightly mussed ponytails to give a "downtown, cool feel," to the otherwise equestrian look.

We think this is one trend that just might hit the trifecta of translating in all three worlds: runway, red carpet and real world. This is the second season funky color has been featured at Fashion Week (the girls at the Spring 2010 Proenza Schouler fashion show rocked lovely lilac streaks) and Lady Gaga recently caused a stir at the Grammys with her own spin on the Crayola color trend. Adding a bright streak of color to your coif is an easy way to add a hip edge to your regularly scheduled hairstyle without a huge commitment. Now all you really have to decide is which happy hue you want to adorn your hair with.

Nars created the look for the 3.1 Phillip Lim Fall 2010 collection.  "This is a youthful, rebellious look that exudes a strong sense of confidence. Energy radiates within the girls through their makeup with eyes that have a bit of a rock and roll feel," said designer Phillip Lim whose inspiration stemmed from an image of Blondie’s Debbie Harry, think disco-punk.

“This look has many layers,” said NARS lead artist Lisa Butler (pictured below). “The eyes are punchy and edgy while the skin was kept healthy and glowing. The lips are a soft, sheer pink for the elegant punk-rock princess style that Phillip was looking for.”

Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper for MAC Viva Glam

Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper for MAC Viva Glam
Back in November, we were on a self-imposed lock down the week before our wedding. (We really didn't want to risk being hungover or tired.) We did make one exception--to meet the new faces of MAC's Viva Glam Lipstick, Cyndi Lauper and Lady Gaga. While the event was a few months ago, we weren't allowed to discuss the details...until now.

We loved hearing Lady Gaga's stories of watching her mom get dressed and handling her curlers and her teenage trips to the MAC store on the Upper Westside. More than anything, we were impressed with how much both ladies truly believed in the mission of the MAC AIDS Fund, that helps raise money to help AIDS organizations working with underserved regions and populations.

Lady Gaga says of her MAC Viva Glam Lipstick:
My new Viva Mac lipstick colour is amazing. It's a blush pink, great for everyday. It's a little bit '80s, which is very me. It's for the everyday women - anyone can wear it and feel great about themselves and embody what Viva Glam is all about. I hope that women buy this lipstick, and honor themselves and honor the cause.

Cyndi Lauper says of her MAC Viva Glam Lipstick:
[It's] a really fabulous red...and it's called Cyndi. How cool is that?

Both lipsticks are available at MAC. Every cent of the selling price of VIVA GLAM Lipstick and Lipglass is donated to the M·A·C AIDS Fund to support men, women, and children living with HIV and AIDS.
