Amanda Seyfried's Hair in Mama Mia

If you can't beat the humidity, may as well have it work for you and go for the full on beach-y look, whether you're on vacation or stuck in the city. For tips, we checked in with the fabulous and talented Edris of NYC's Edris Salon. Being a island lady herself (she hails from St. Vincent and now lives on the island of Manhattan, which is about as steamy as any Carribbean Isle these days), Edris has more than a few tricks up her elegant sleeves.

Her secret weapon? Aloe vera. She uses it in place of gel, because it dries soft. To get beachy waves like Amanda Seyfried's, Edris recommends a leave-in conditioner, followed by a dab of aloe finger-combed through wet hair (the amount depends on the thickness of your hair and the length). Then braid your hair. The key--Edris made us stop typing notes into our Blackberry to make sure we were listening and watching, so we know this step is important--is to braid the hair flat and close to your head. She says this eliminates frizz because it flattens the shaft. She braids hair in five sections, three in the center from the forehead to the nape of your neck and one on each side.

Need somewhere to wear that beach-y hair? How about the island where Mamma Mia was filmed?

What type of leave in conditioner do you recommend? And where can you buy this aloe vera for your hair???

Edris means aloe straight from the plant. You just break off a leaf and squeeze the gel on out. We have a call in to her about which specific leave-in conditioner she recommends.

We tried this look ourselves the other day. It really did give us perfect beach-y waves! When we try it agian, we will start the braid closer to the roots. The top part was a little flat, so we pulled it back--just like Amanda's in the photo.

Thank youuuuu. I am going to try this today. I just LOVE Amanda's hair. Do you braid the hair when it is wet, and what kind of conditioner should I use? Thank you!

I'd suggest braiding your hair when it's slightly damp (either let hair air dry first or rough dry it with your hairdryer). I've been using a leave in spray on conditioner from Ojon which does a nice job with my long hair and dry ends. You can find it at Sephora. Good luck and let us know how you did!
Thanks, Hope

How much time do you leave the braids in to get the right wave effect?

I left it in overnight. It definitely takes a few hours for your hair to dry when it's braided. Good luck!

I love Amanda's hair in Mama Mia, so is like my favorite actress. I was wondering if you could get a perm to look like hers or if you have to do what you said and braid it. THANKS SO MUCH!

Sally Herschberger makes a great line of products available at drugstores. Less expensive lines like L'Oreal, VO5 and Pantene also have styling lines that would work well. Read the instructions and try a couple different ones out. That's what we do here!

I really love her hair! My hair is perfect for those kind of waves because it holds curls and is slightly wavy. Do you think I could use aloe vera out of a bottle?

The Jet Set Girls said...

I don't know if there's anything in processed aloe vera (in bottle) that is bad for your hair. With that said, you're straying into experimentation zone; but we do that all the time. If you try it, come back and let us know how it worked.

OMG !! I love her hair and what you said works and i just love it!!!! I also found another way to do your hair like this!! VERY simple!! When your hair is wet like after a shower have someone french braid it in two braids when it is dry spray hairspray in it a few times and take it out!!!! I love my hair like this!!

i always loved this hairstyle. but im curious, dont the braids give you more have a krimped look over the beachy waves?

Anon-
Because you braid your hair in five sections, it does create pretty beach waves. If you braided it in smaller sections, you might run the risk of your hair turning more 80s' krimped.

Is it French braids that you have to do or just normal ones?

The Jet Set Girls said...

You can try either type of braids. We do french braids and get better results that way.
